Some might choose to use the term ‘blonde hottie’ to describe young VD reporter Lauren Glendenning – however the ECT must report this week, that Ms. Glendenning did little last week to advance the intellectual cause of blond women everywhere.
Strike 1 – Lauren’s story on – are folks moving out of Eagle County? Answer: Most certainly yes. Lauren’s story used (questionable?) numbers from the local public school system – to suggest otherwise – by our read. Her story neglected to report the fact that local private schools are taking the bulk of the economic hit with student enrollment numbers decreasing. Fact is some local families can no longer afford private school prices – opting instead for public school enrollment – which has the obvious effect of stabilizing public school enrollment numbers – even when the local population is shrinking.
Strike 2 – Hopping Mad were some in the Vail Lodging community last week – with Lauren’s incomplete story on this summers across the board occupancy numbers. True, there was/is a slight uptick in occupancy numbers – however left under reported was the fact that this slight uptick was the result of very heavy lodging rate discounting.
Regrettably this kind of VD reporting has more to do with ‘local cheerleading’ than an accurate report on what’s really going on. This fact is obviously driven by the VD’s desire to paint our local economy as “all OK” in the Daily’s desperate attempt to sell more print advertising.
While the ECT is busy issuing corrections from last week – we need to include ourselves as well. Reported last week in our story about the suspiciously fast advances in Judge Moorhead’s career…the ECT should have reported that Moorhead served as County Attorney – before being picked as a District Court Judge. The ECT incorrectly used the term County Court Judge before being chosen as a District Court Judge. Nothing, repeat nothing has been reported to the ECT to change our belief that this Judge’s career (fairy god mother?) has her corporate headquarters – in Broomfield.
Gerald Gallegos – they called him a ‘Capitalist’ (actually it was Gerald’s brother Glenn that did) at last Saturday’s Memorial. The VD’s rebounded reporter Randy Wyrick wrote that fact into his story this week – of course after the ECT reported that fact last week…
More ECT facts they didn’t tell you are…that even though Gerald carried the burden of a (D) behind his name in the County’s voting records database – Gerald was a man
who believed that friendship trumps ideology – when it comes to elections. Gerald’s Memorial Service was MC’d by close friend Richard DeClark. Richard DeClark (R) you’ll recall ran for County Commissioner in 2004 and was supported completely by Gerald. It is also a fact that Richard’s opponent (Peter “please don’t ask me about Stratton Flats”) Runyon – went on to vote as a County Commissioner for the $4.5 Million dollar taxpayer debacle known as Stratton Flats. Gerald it seems, like the ECT crowd – knew what they we’re doing when they voted in 2004, unfortunately not enough other voters did.
For the record (for those that knew Gerald) there is little doubt that a Gallegos employee that was directly responsible for a $4.5 Million dollar loss – to the Gallegos Corporation – would no longer be employed at Gerald’s Company.
How has Commissioner Runyon responded to this $4.5 Million dollar taxpayer loss? – by voting to put on this November’s County wide ballot – a question – that would allow him to serve a third, four-year term.
See if you can guess how our friend Mr. Gerald Gallegos – would be voting on that upcoming November question.
Lauren’s story was accurate – lodging rates in Vail are up over 2009 levels; occupancy is up more than rates, but rates are still up. Rates are not at 2008 levels; I believe Lauren’s article had a complete chart of the past 2-3 years for both occupancy and rates in the sidebar. Obviously, this can vary property-by-property but the undisputed fact is that research shows that rates are up over 2009.
Chris – the ECT would like to politely suggest that you spend more time speaking with your lodging members…and less time reviewing the alleged numbers.
The ECT folks have many+1 customers that work in Vail’s lodging community – we’re hearing a much different story – than the story that you and Ms. Lauren are suggesting.
ECT does want to be polite. ECT not trying to be a ‘smart-arz’ with our answer.
Let’s both see what other comments – the lodging community posts online this week – at the ECT.
ECT stands by our story.
The research is based on 56% of Vail’s bed base; I’d love to have more participation from lodges that might influence the numbers (in either direction). But as it stands….based on the statistically valid research, collected monthly from participating properties…..both occupancy & rates are up over 2009 levels. Individual results can certainly vary from the community totals.
