Chris Romer – Wants you to pay more Taxes!

by  the Forces fighting against more confiscatory taxation!

Last week Mr. Chris Romer (executive director of the Vail Valley Partnership) weighed in, in his capacity as a private citizen – to let us all know that we should “invest” more in our Community by paying additional TAXES.  (Click Here)

Private Citizen – Mr. Chris Romer is certainly entitled to his opinion.  As are we.

A few questions for Mr. Romer – that Mr. Romer has some how overlooked…

1 – Local Job Loss?  Families moving out of Eagle County to find construction (read:any) job elsewhere?  Does Mr. Romer know what the current Eagle County home foreclosure rate is?  (404 YTD – Click Here)

2 – Is Mr. Romer aware that the Eagle County Taxpayer is currently ‘on the hook’ for $230 Million in Long Term School Bond debt? (Click Here)  Is a Property Tax increase for Public Schools really necessary on top of what we already pay annually as our property tax “Investment”?

3 – Mr. Romer clearly argues for more “Investment” in Education.  What are the results of the Investment the County Taxpayer has already made, Mr. Romer?  If a local family is trying to save for their children’s college education, how does your proposal for additional taxation fit into that family’s budget, Mr. Romer?  Just exactly how much taxation (er…investment) is enough, Mr. Romer?

4 – Has Mr. Romer seen the Educational Documentary – “Waiting for Superman” (Click Here)  The ECT folks most certainly have watched it and reported it!

5 – Has Mr. Romer considered the rampant multi-year job loss Eagle County has endured – that has been driving the massive County home foreclose rate – now in its 3rd year?

Perhaps what is needed is a suggestion for Mr. Romer.  If you, your family and business are just trying to ‘make ends meet’ these days… might want to CONSIDER NOT PAYING your membership dues into Mr. Romer’s – Vail Valley Partnership – in favor of using your remaining financial resources to pay additional Property Taxes that are endorsed by Mr. Romer.

From Mr. Romer’s – mission statement – at the Vail Valley Partnership…”The VVP takes a leadership role with community and business partners to provide a business-to-business resource and voice for businesses in addition to our destination marketing & sales efforts.”

Frankly the ECT can’t figure out just what kind of a “voice” Mr. Romer (his: organization?) is talking about.  The last time the ECT heard a “voice” like this – it was coming out of the mouth of Rep. Nancy Pelosi.  Certainly not a voice trying to help Eagle County’s (still struggling) Private Sector create more local jobs….

Keep in mind…then Speaker, Nancy Pelosi was handed a new job after Voters woke up last November.

Isn’t it time for you to wake up too, Mr. Romer, and join the rest of us already making a significant “investment” in our Community, today?

  1. ECT why haven’t folks heard much from the Vail Daily Editorial Board lately?
After seeing how the ECT made Chris Romer’s view of things around here, look like 3 day old road kill on a Phoenix highway, seems like the Vail Daily Editorial Board is hiding out.
Go get them ect. At least we have you to look out for the rest of us.

  3. Your commentary on Chris Romer’s position is “on all fours” with reality; why is it that the school board members, “supers”, the NEA, public educational unions and the vast majority of educators aver that the quantity of money is directly proportional to the quality of education; when considering the fields of science, mathematics, or even languages in general, such as German, French, Russian, etc., the extant educational results of our school district and the country in general, belie this precept? When the school district can manifest positive results (grades, scores) from the monies it already receives, when it can break the “lock-step” it has with the NEA and the constraints of the US Dept. of Education regarding curriculum and the verity of its publications (school books), then and only then, can we justify further taxation; ergo, TAXES FOMENTING RESULTS! Kind of like TAXES FOMENTING JOBS!

The education of children is as much the responsibility of parents and relatives as it is of the minions in government; it is a personal and individual obligation that parents have to the ensuing generations; kind of like LEAVING A DEBT FREE SOCIETY TO THEM! It is far too easy for parents and guardians to shirk their fiduciary obligations by relegating those duties to governmental bureaucracies – kind of like PUTTING YOU AGED MOTHER IN A NURSING HOME; and we know where that gets you – higher taxes, more administration (a/k/a “Czars”) and less results! Rather than a blanket “stimulus” initiative as promoted by Romer et al with a dubious and speculative result, would it be more appropriate and provident to “stimulate” the parents and individual teachers to adhere more to their respective dedications? A “no” vote this November just may translate into a “yes” vote for more parental involvement in the educational system, and encourage teachers to “step-out-of-the-box”, and provide QUALITY to the educational experience, rather than just doing a job pursuant to the dictates of a bureaucracy.

On average, the wealthiest people in America pay a lot more taxes than the middle class or the poor, according to government data. They pay at a higher rate, and as a group, they contribute a much larger share of the overall taxes collected by the federal government.

The 10 percent of households with the highest incomes pay more than half of all federal taxes.

He wants to make sure millionaires are taxed at higher rates than their secretaries. “Middle-class families shouldn’t pay higher taxes than millionaires and billionaires,” Obama said
